  Ira D. Nelson, 65; Was Country Musician AUSTIN, Texas (AP)- Ira D. “Pop” Nelson, father of country singer Willie Nelson and a country-western musician himself, died in a local hospital yesterday after a brief illness. Mr. Nelson, who was 65, ran Willie’s Pool Hall, a gathering place for local country musicians. He played bass in the “Pop Nelson, Leon Carter, Willie’s Pool Hall Playboy Band.” The band played engagements at numerous country-western dance halls in this area and recently cut a record for release in January. “Everybody knew Pop. … He helped local musicians by giving them encouragement. His place was the place they hung out,” said Sammy Allred, a country-western disc jockey and a member of the Geezinslaw Brothers singing group. Allred said, however, the senior Nelson had no real influence on Willie Nelson’s style. He said “Pop” Nelson played in the band until he was hospitalized about three weeks ago.
